The Premature Baby Charity for Northern Ireland

Belfast City Council becomes the first local authority in Northern Ireland to introduce a neonatal leave and pay policy.

Belfast City Council has become the first authority in Northern Ireland to introduce a neonatal leave and pay policy for their staff!

In collaboration with TinyLife, Belfast City Council has developed a policy that provides up to 12 weeks of additional leave for staff with a newborn who has spent time in a neonatal care unit after birth.

Premature births often force families across Northern Ireland to return to work much earlier than anticipated, adding further stress to an already challenging time. This policy ensures that staff can spend the same amount of time with their families as those with babies born full-term.

Joanne Morgan, CEO of TinyLife, shared: “TinyLife is delighted that Belfast City Council has shown great leadership in being the first council in Northern Ireland to voluntarily implement a policy of this type. This is a really positive step, and we hope it will encourage not just other councils, but many more employers across Northern Ireland to follow suit.”
